Most people want to know what laser hair removal feels like before they book. The honest answer is that it varies, but for most people it is manageable.
What it usually feels like
Many clients describe a quick snap or a warm pinprick as each pulse of the laser is delivered, a little like a flick of an elastic band. It is short, and the sensation fades quickly after each pulse. Some people barely notice it. Others find it uncomfortable, especially at first.
Which areas are more sensitive
Sensitivity differs between people and between areas. Areas with finer skin or lots of nerve endings, such as the upper lip, underarms and bikini line, tend to feel stronger than larger areas such as the legs. Thicker, darker hair can feel sharper than fine hair, because there is more pigment for the laser to absorb.
What affects how it feels
- The area being treated.
- Your hair: thick, dark hair absorbs more energy.
- Your skin: if it is tanned or sensitive, treatment can feel stronger.
- The time of the month: some people notice they are more sensitive around their period.
- Nerves: feeling anxious can make any sensation feel bigger.
What helps
Tell your technician how you are feeling and you will find we can adjust the pace of treatment to suit you. One of our clients said Mel "went with a pace that worked for me", and we always work at your own pace. Avoid the sun before treatment, and wear loose clothing afterwards.
Is it worth it?
Some clients tell us it is less painful than they expected, and sessions are quick. If you are nervous, say so at your free consultation. We can talk you through exactly what will happen, and you can ask any question you like.
