Before you start

How long should you leave between laser hair removal sessions?

Laser hair removal sessions are spaced several weeks apart. Here is why the gap matters and what happens if you leave it too long or too short.

· 3 min read

Short answer: Sessions are spaced several weeks apart, commonly about four to six weeks, and your technician sets the gap that suits your area.

Laser hair removal sessions are not booked back to back. They are spaced several weeks apart, and the gap is part of how the treatment works.

Why there is a gap

The laser is most effective on hairs in their growth phase. After a session, the treated hairs fall out, and new hairs move into the growth phase over the following weeks. We leave enough time for those hairs to appear, then treat them.

What a typical gap looks like

Many clinics space sessions about four to six weeks apart, although it depends on the area. Hair on the face tends to grow back faster than hair on the body, so facial areas are often treated at shorter intervals than the legs or back. Your technician sets the gap that suits your area and your hair, and will tell you when to book your next visit.

What if I leave it too long?

A longer gap is not harmful, but it can slow your progress, because you may miss the window when hairs are at the right stage. If you have to postpone, tell us and we will rebook you as soon as we can. You do not have to start again.

What if I come too soon?

Coming earlier than advised will not speed things up. Hairs that are not yet in the growth phase will not respond, and your skin may not have settled from the last session.

What to do between sessions

  • Shave if you need to, but do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate.
  • Protect treated skin from the sun and use sunscreen.
  • Follow the aftercare advice from your technician.

Planning your course

If you have never had laser before, six to eight sessions are typically advised. Over that time, the whole course can take several months. We talk through the timings at your free consultation, so you can see how it fits around your life, holidays and events.
