Gloved hand holding a laser handpiece during a treatment

Before you start

Why do I need a patch test before laser hair removal?

Every client has a patch test before laser hair removal. Here is what it involves and why we will not skip it.

Short answer: A patch test is a small test treatment, mandatory with us, carried out 24 hours before your treatment begins to confirm the safest setting for your skin.

A patch test is a small test treatment on a hidden or less visible patch of skin. At Whistles Laser Clinic it is mandatory, and we carry it out 24 hours before your treatment begins.

What it is for

Skin and hair differ from person to person, and the laser has different settings to suit them. The patch test confirms the safest, most effective setting for you. It also shows how your skin responds before we treat a larger area, so any reaction is small and easy to manage.

What happens

We choose a small spot in or near the area you want treated and use the laser on it at the planned setting. You then leave it alone for the following day, and we check how your skin has reacted before going ahead.

Why we do it 24 hours before

The test needs time. A day gives your skin the chance to show any reaction, so we are not guessing. It also means we set up your first session based on how your own skin behaved, not on a general chart.

Is it painful?

Most people find a patch test no worse than the treatment itself, and it only involves a very small area. Tell your technician straight away if anything feels uncomfortable.

Who needs one

Everyone. Even if you have had laser before, a new clinic, a new device or a different area is a reason to test again. We would rather do one more test than take a risk with your skin.

What to do before and after

  • Shave the test area if asked.
  • Avoid sun, sunbeds and fake tan beforehand.
  • Do not apply anything to the area afterwards, and follow any instructions we give you.

If you are unsure about timing, ask when you book. The patch test is part of your plan, and it is explained at your free consultation.
