Skin and hair

Does laser hair removal work on blonde, red or grey hair?

Laser works on the colour in your hair, so very light hair can be harder to treat. Here is what that means for you.

Short answer: Laser targets pigment, so dark hair responds best. Blonde, red, light, grey and white hair respond less well, and we tell you honestly what to expect at your consultation.

Laser hair removal works by targeting the colour, or pigment, in the hair. That means hair colour makes a real difference to how well treatment works, and it is better to know before you pay for a course.

How colour affects results

  • Dark brown and black hair: the most pigment, so the laser picks it out easily and these hairs usually respond best.
  • Brown hair: often responds well, although it may take a few more sessions.
  • Blonde, red, light and grey or white hair: little or no pigment, so there is less for the laser to target. Results are often smaller, and some hairs may not respond at all.

Hair thickness counts too

Fine hair has less pigment than coarse hair, so it can be harder to treat. Fine, light hair on the face is a common example. Results are often slower, and sometimes less complete.

What we can do

We assess your hair and skin at your free consultation, and tell you honestly what we expect. In some cases we will advise that laser will help with some of your hair and not all of it. In others, we may suggest that laser is not the right treatment for you. We would rather say so than take your money.

What to do about hairs that do not respond

If some hairs do not respond, other methods such as shaving or threading may still be needed for those.

Why a patch test still matters

A patch test confirms the safest, most effective setting for you, and shows how your hair and skin respond. It is part of your plan and is done 24 hours before treatment.
