How to prepare for laser hair removal

A little preparation helps treatment go smoothly. Here is the usual guidance, and why your technician will give you instructions to follow.

Short answer: Shave the area, avoid the sun, sunbeds and fake tan, do not wax or pluck, and have your patch test 24 hours before treatment. Always follow the instructions your technician gives you.

Good preparation helps your treatment go smoothly and keeps your skin safe. The exact advice depends on you and on the clinic, so always follow the instructions your technician gives you. Here is the usual guidance, explained.

Shave the area

Laser works on the hair beneath the skin, so the hair above the surface does not need to be there. You are usually asked to shave the area before your session. Do not wax, pluck, thread or epilate between sessions, because those methods remove the hair root, and the laser needs the root to be there to treat it.

Avoid the sun

Tanned skin makes treatment less safe, because the laser targets colour. Avoid sunbeds, sunbathing and fake tan before treatment, and use sunscreen on exposed areas. Tell your technician if you have recently been in the sun.

Come with clean, bare skin

Skin should be clean and free of creams, perfumes, deodorant and make-up in the area being treated.

Tell us about your health

At your consultation, tell us about any medication you take, any skin conditions, and anything else that might affect treatment. This helps us plan safely.

Have your patch test

A patch test is mandatory with us, and it is carried out 24 hours before treatment. It confirms the safest, most effective setting for your skin. If you are not sure when yours is due, ask when you book.

What we will do at your consultation

Your first visit is a free consultation. We talk through what you would like to achieve and answer your questions, assess your skin and hair, and create a personalised plan. You will leave knowing exactly what to do before your first session.
